Praise for Scorched Earth:
“Others have attempted to blend the genres of an investigative detective piece with sci-fi, but few achieve such a seamless integration as do McFall and Hays … a compelling saga, edgy and different, thoroughly absorbing.”

This author duo takes a unique approach to combining science fiction with realistic fiction in this dystopian based novel. Imagine this, you’re on Mars living during a time where an organization called Halo, the planet’s artificial intelligence that is now ruling the “new earth.” This organization forces separation between upper and lower class. You consider yourself a family man and the sole guardian of a younger sibling. Previously, said sibling went missing and you did whatever you needed to get your sibling back after the new government refused to locate them. With all of this information in mind, wouldn’t you want to take a break from your very active detective lifestyle and lay low? That is not the case for the main character Crucial. Who with a name like that, why not live a life of taking chances. This the second installment in the The Halo Trilogy and you can tell by the book that this won’t be the last. Although this is my first read by this author duo, I do see myself reading more books of theirs shortly. Although, their writing and technical terms can be a bit daunting in the beginning. The authors do a wonderful job providing the reader with enough context to fully engage with the storyline even if they have not read book one. No worries, you can also check out a quick synopsis of book one if you only have book two in your grasps and you’ll be able to finish book two with minimal confusion.
I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in a science fiction dystopian novel. I personally normally do not read these types of science fiction novels but after this book, my opinions have changed. The book can seem a bit overwhelming at the beginning if you have never read a science fiction book but the text tends to warm up as you progress throughout the story. You will enjoy the humor, twist and turns, and character development. The authors writing style flows so well, you aren’t able to tell that two authors contributed to this novel.
I don’t want to share too much but this is a book you should add to your shelf and be sure while you’re out to grab book one in the series as well.
